There are close to 1.5 billion Muslims in the world observe total fasting (no food or water) between dawn to sunset in the month of Ramadan. They do so not for losing weight or any medical benefit, but for them it is ordained in their Holy Book Quran which says.

Sadaqah

Sadaqah is also a means of moral learning.  Sadaqah (Charity) is an Ibadah (worship). According to Hadith, Sadaqah is prescribed for every person every day the sun rises.

Charity, preached by every religion of the world, is a way of bringing justice to society. And justice is the essence of religion, Islam has therefore made charity that is Zakah, obligatory and binding upon all those who embrace the faith; it has been made into an institution in order to give in permanence and regularity.

Zakah

'Lo those who believe and do good deeds and establish Salah and pay Zakah, their reward is with the Sustainer; and no fear shall come on them, nor shall they grieve.' (Qur'an 2:227)

Western tradition regards work and labor as a cost incurred by those who want to consume the goods thus made available to them.  The natural condition of mankind is considered to be one in which the earth will not satisfy human needs except when human beings work to make it do so.
